Cursed ‘Annabelle’ Doll May be at Center of Covert Operation to Contain Chinese Influence

By: Montana Payne

WASHINGTON — As the U.S. seeks new ways to check China’s expanding influence, President Trump has reportedly taken an unusual interest in a classified Pentagon program exploring “paranormal strategic deterrents.” According to three senior officials familiar with recent briefings at Mar-a-Lago, Trump has privately pushed advisers to consider “all available means of bolstering American military primacy” — including, in one case, a haunted doll linked to multiple Hollywood films.

The doll in question is Annabelle, the allegedly cursed artifact housed at the Warren Occult Museum but, according to multiple entertainment insiders, currently under the personal supervision of comedian Matt Rife, who took custodianship as part of a promotional paranormal business venture.

Two high ranking intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity to describe discussions they characterized as “deeply irregular,” claim Trump is intrigued by internal Pentagon analyses that refer to Annabelle not as a paranormal object, but as a potential “strategic defense asset.”

One official summarized Trump’s position:

“He thinks if China is experimenting with advanced influence operations, we should at least evaluate the possibility of countering it with a ‘powerfully strong ghost’. His words, not ours.”

A Doll With “Operational Potential”?

A draft memo prepared by the Office of Emerging Threats and obtained by this publication assesses Annabelle’s rumored abilities — unexplained environmental disturbances, influence over observers, and heightened fear responses — in purely strategic terms.

The memo asks whether such an artifact, “if its effects can be stabilized and directed,” could be used to deter aggression or disrupt adversarial decision-making.

One defense analyst familiar with early evaluations said:

“Nobody in the building is saying the doll is real or not real. What they are saying is that if even a fraction of the folklore is grounded in observable phenomena, America may have found its first ghost soldier.”

The analyst added that the document has circulated mostly among “junior staffers who believe in ghosts” but insisted it is nevertheless attracting attention “at higher levels than anyone expected.”

The “Matt Rife Complication”

Even if Annabelle were deemed strategically viable, the U.S. faces a logistical obstacle: custody.

Annabelle is currently under the guardianship of comedian Matt Rife, whose touring schedule and social-media following have, in recent months, become a minor fascination for foreign-policy analysts. Clips of his stand-up — particularly his well-known “fine china” bit — have been repeatedly cited on Chinese platforms as evidence of “friendly comedic attitudes” toward the PRC.

A State Department official familiar with internal analyses called this “probably nothing,” but acknowledged that Rife’s perceived openness to China has complicated outreach.

“Look, the idea of a geopolitical custody fight over a haunted doll is absurd,” the official said. “But the comedian’s comments do raise soft-power considerations.”

Beijing Takes Notice

Chinese analysts have reportedly taken an unexpected interest in U.S. chatter surrounding Annabelle. A translated report from a defense think tank affiliated with the People’s Liberation Army Research Academy describes the doll as “a culturally potent symbol with potential psychological leverage,” adding that “American fixation on occult artifacts may present opportunities.”

One European intelligence officer paraphrased a Chinese assessment this way:

“They don’t believe in the doll. But they believe America believes in the doll. Strategically, that’s enough.”

A Converging Crisis

As of this writing, no formal request has been made for the transfer of Annabelle into government custody. However, internal communications show escalating debate over how far the United States should go in pursuing “myth-infused deterrence assets.”

One senior U.S. official, asked whether Annabelle truly represented a potential bulwark against China, sighed before offering a guarded reply:

“Do I think a cursed doll will determine global power? No. Do I think someone in Washington believes it will? Absolutely.”

When approached for comment, Matt Rife declined, stating only through a representative that he is “focused on touring, fitness, and maintaining a safe environment for all household objects.”

Trump, asked directly about Annabelle during a brief private discussion with defense advisors, responded:

“Some people say it’s the most powerful doll in history. Some people say that. We’re looking into it. We’re looking very strongly.”

For now, the fate of the world’s most infamous supernatural object hangs in limbo: part pop-culture myth, part national-security curiosity, and part bargaining chip held by a comedian who may or may not be joking about his geopolitical loyalties.
